Timed practice with past papers

How to simulate the real exam at home, choose an attempt strategy and use your timings to get faster without losing accuracy.

Knowing the answers isn’t enough. You have to reach them within the time allowed. Timed practice with real past papers is the most reliable way to build that speed.

Recreate the exam

  • Same duration, one sitting. Use the official time limit from the latest notification. No pausing.
  • Same time of day, if you can. If the exam is in the morning, practise in the morning.
  • Same format. Print the paper or use a single screen, and mark answers on a separate sheet as you would on an OMR sheet.
  • No phone, no notes. Keep a clock where you can see it.

Decide your attempt strategy in advance

Before you start, decide:

  1. Order. Will you go straight through, or take your strongest section first?
  2. Skip rule. For example: if a question isn’t clear within 60 seconds, mark it and move on.
  3. Guessing rule. If the exam has negative marking, decide when an educated guess is worth it. Usually that’s when you can rule out at least one option. Check the marking scheme in your exam’s current notification.

Write these rules down and stick to them. Then review whether they helped.

Record time, not just score

After each paper, note:

  • total score and number attempted;
  • accuracy (correct ÷ attempted);
  • where you lost time: questions you spent too long on and still got wrong.

Accuracy and attempts together tell you more than the score alone. High accuracy with few attempts means you need speed. Many attempts with low accuracy means you need restraint.

Build up gradually

You don’t need a full paper every day. A reasonable rhythm while you’re still studying is one full timed paper a week, plus timed section practice on other days. In the last few weeks, increase full papers but leave a day after each one for review.

Use papers from different years

Rotate years so you don’t memorise answers. Keep the two most recent papers for the final weeks as “dress rehearsals”, since they’re closest to the current pattern.
