Reading exam patterns from past papers

How to analyse several years of papers to spot recurring topics, question styles and difficulty trends, without over-reading the data.

Several years of papers side by side show trends that no single paper can. Here’s a lightweight way to analyse them.

Build a topic grid

Make a grid with syllabus units as rows and years as columns. For each paper, count how many questions fall into each unit. Five years of a 100-question paper takes an evening and pays off for months.

What to look for

  • Steady units. Topics with roughly the same share every year. These are reliable marks, so cover them thoroughly.
  • Rising or falling units. A clear trend over several years is worth noting, but don’t overreact to a single year.
  • Question style. Are questions direct facts, statement-based (“which of the following are correct”), application or calculation? Practise in the styles that dominate.
  • Difficulty. Note which papers felt harder and why: longer questions, unfamiliar areas, or trickier options.

Avoid over-reading

Paper-setters change, syllabi get revised and patterns are updated in notifications. Use trends to weight your preparation, not to skip whole units. Always confirm the current syllabus and pattern in the latest official notification.

State PSC exams

State commission exams usually have a state-specific general knowledge section alongside general studies. When analysing those papers, separate state-specific questions from national ones. They usually need different sources, and the state share can vary between years.
