Functions of management: POSDCORB
Understand
Luther Gulick, with Lyndall Urwick (1937), packed an administrator's functions into the acronym POSDCORB. In educational management planning comes first — only once the goal and the route are fixed can organising, directing, co-ordinating and evaluating follow.
| Letter | Function | School example |
|---|---|---|
| P | Planning | Annual plan, academic calendar |
| O | Organising | Classes, time-table, allocation of responsibilities |
| S | Staffing | Availability and deployment of teachers |
| D | Directing | Giving orders and guidance |
| CO | Co-ordinating | Harmonising work of teachers, parents and the SMC |
| R | Reporting | Information/reports to higher authorities |
| B | Budgeting | Planning and accounting for grants |
Example
Before the session starts, the head teacher sets the goal that every child will read at grade level this year and decides activities for it → planning.
Remember
'CO' = Co-ordinating, not Controlling. 'Controlling' is in Henri Fayol's list of management functions.
Common mistake
Crediting POSDCORB to Henri Fayol or F.W. Taylor. It is Gulick and Urwick's.
