Measurement, evaluation and Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE)
Understand
Measurement only gives a number: 'Ravi scored 32 out of 50'. Evaluation adds qualitative description and a value judgement: 'good progress, needs practice in fractions'. So evaluation is broader than measurement.
Evaluation = measurement (quantitative) + qualitative description + value judgement
| Word in CCE | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Continuous | Regular assessment throughout the session — during teaching, not only at the year's end |
| Comprehensive | Both scholastic (subjects) and co-scholastic (life skills, attitudes, values, health, arts) areas |
Rule
Section 29 of the RTE Act names comprehensive and continuous evaluation in the curriculum and evaluation procedure.
Example
Alongside maths marks, the teacher also notes the child's co-operation, cleanliness and drawing → the 'comprehensive' side of CCE.
Common mistake
Taking 'comprehensive' to mean 'all chapters of the syllabus'. Comprehensive = both scholastic and co-scholastic areas.
