Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
Understand
Motivation is the inner force that makes a person start, direct and sustain action towards a goal. Sequence: need → drive → incentive (goal).
| Basis | Intrinsic | Extrinsic |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Joy, curiosity, interest in the task itself | From outside — rewards, marks, praise, fear of punishment |
| Example | Reading storybooks in free time for enjoyment | Studying to win a cash prize |
| Durability | Long-lasting, deeper learning | May fall once the reward stops |
Rule
The most effective long-term way: make learning activities interesting and linked to children's lives — this builds intrinsic motivation.
Example
A girl reads storybooks in free time simply because she enjoys reading → intrinsic motivation.
Common mistake
Treating praise, marks or stars as intrinsic — they come from outside, so they are extrinsic.
