Identifying learning needs
Understand
Every child's need is different — one needs a language bridge, another an eye check, another extra practice. In a primary class the best way to identify needs is continuous observation, oral questioning and analysis of children's work (notebooks, drawings, writing) — not a single annual exam.
Rule
Watch for signs: a sudden change in behaviour, copying wrongly from the board, squinting, often asking 'what?'.
Simple, safe first steps: seat the child in front, talk to the parents, arrange a health check (school health programme).
Use the home language as a bridge: NEP 2020 says that wherever possible the medium of instruction until at least Grade 5 should be the home language/mother tongue/local language.
Example
A usually attentive child stops completing work, squints at the board and copies wrongly from it, but reads well from a book held close → first seat the child in front and arrange a vision check through the parents/health programme.
Example
A tribal girl in Class 1 speaks only her home language → use her language as a bridge and introduce Hindi gradually; do not forbid her language.
Common mistake
Calling such a child 'lazy' or 'weak' and punishing, or at once advising a special school. Find the cause first.
