Growth vs development
Understand
Growth means an increase in body size, height, weight and so on — something you can measure with a tape or a weighing machine. Development is the wider term: it includes growth and also qualitative changes in skills, thinking, language, emotions and behaviour.
| Basis | Growth | Development |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Quantitative | Quantitative + qualitative |
| Measurement | Can be measured directly | Hard to measure fully; judged by observation |
| Duration | Largely stops after maturity | Continues in some form throughout life |
| Scope | Mainly physical | Physical, cognitive, social, emotional, moral — all |
| Relation | One part of development | The wider process; includes growth |
Example
Height going from 110 cm to 120 cm → growth.
Learning to share toys and take turns → development (social).
Moving from 'ma-ma' to full sentences → development (language).
Remember
If the option talks of 'measurable / size / weight / height', it is growth; if it talks of 'learning / behaviour / skill / thinking', it is development.
Common mistake
'Growth continues throughout life' is wrong. Physical growth largely stops after maturity; development continues for life.
