Abbreviations (1): institutions and payment systems

Understand

Banking awareness papers love one-line questions such as 'What does the M in MICR stand for?' or 'Which body operates IMPS?'. These marks are easy only if the full form is learnt together with ONE identifying fact — who runs it, what it does, or when it began. This concept covers institutions (banks and regulators of the Indian system) and payment systems; the next three concepts cover monetary and credit terms, financial inclusion, and markets and global bodies. A useful habit is to split a full form into its job words. In payment systems, 'Settlement' and 'Clearing' tell you how money moves: RTGS = Real Time GROSS Settlement (each payment settled individually at once), while NEFT settles in batches on a NET basis. 'Bharat' and 'National' in a name usually point to NPCI products, while NEFT and RTGS are owned and operated by RBI itself. For institutions, remember the founding year alongside the name — RBI 1935, NABARD 1982, NPCI 2008 — because exams often pair the two.

Rule

  • RBI operates NEFT and RTGS; NPCI operates retail systems — UPI, IMPS, NACH, AePS, APBS, NETC, BBPS, CTS, NFS and the RuPay card network.

  • IFSC is an 11-character code: the first 4 letters identify the bank, the 5th character is 0 (kept for future use), and the last 6 identify the branch.

  • MICR code is 9 digits: 3 for the city, 3 for the bank and 3 for the branch; it is printed on cheques for machine sorting.

  • AePS lets a customer withdraw or deposit at a micro-ATM using Aadhaar and fingerprint; APBS is used by government to credit benefits (DBT) to Aadhaar-linked accounts.

  • DICGC is a wholly owned subsidiary of RBI that insures bank deposits; NaBFID (2021) is an infrastructure DFI and should not be confused with NABARD.

  • SWIFT is a secure messaging network for cross-border payments; it does not itself move money.

Common mistake

  • NEFT and RTGS are run by RBI, not NPCI — a very common wrong answer.

  • The 5th character of IFSC is the digit zero, not the letter O.

  • AePS (customer transactions at micro-ATMs) and APBS (government benefit transfers) are different systems.

  • NaBFID (infrastructure, 2021) is not NABARD (agriculture and rural, 1982).
