October 2026 — banking & financial current affairs
Understand
October 2026 opened with a turn in the rate cycle. After holding the repo rate at 5.25% since December 2025, the MPC raised it to 5.50% and moved to a 'calibrated tightening' stance, citing broad-based price pressures from a weak monsoon, El Niño and high energy prices linked to the West Asia conflict. RBI also tightened forex-derivative rules and opened a dollar window for oil companies to support the rupee. For exams, learn the new corridor (SDF 5.25% – repo 5.50% – MSF 5.75%), what the new stance means, and how the Paytm Payments Bank story ended (licence cancelled → wound up → removed from the Second Schedule). The UPI MDR framework announced in September takes effect on 15 October 2026.
Rule
Repo rate is the rate at which RBI lends overnight to banks under the LAF; the SDF rate (floor) is repo minus 25 bps and the MSF rate (ceiling) is repo plus 25 bps; the Bank Rate is kept equal to the MSF rate.
A 'calibrated tightening' stance signals that rate cuts are off the table for now — the next move can only be a hike or a pause.
The Second Schedule of the RBI Act, 1934 lists scheduled banks; inclusion or exclusion is notified in the Gazette.
CVA is the fall in a derivative's value when the counterparty's credit worsens; Basel III requires capital for it.
Account Aggregators (NBFC-AAs) share a customer's financial data between institutions only with consent.
Current position
MPC (63rd meeting, 5–7 October 2026) raised the repo rate by 25 bps to 5.50% by a unanimous vote; SDF rate 5.25%, MSF rate and Bank Rate 5.75%. The stance changed from neutral to 'calibrated tightening' (Dr. Nagesh Kumar and Prof. Ram Singh preferred to keep it neutral).

Common mistake
October 2026 was a HIKE (5.25% → 5.50%), not a cut; the last cut was in December 2025.
The rate vote was unanimous; the two dissents were only on the stance.
FERR applies to contracts above USD 2 million, while the no-proof hedging limit is USD 5 million — do not mix the two figures.
The CVA Directions were issued in October 2026 but apply only from 1 April 2027.
